The concept for this project originated in 2020, during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
At that time, local site management noticed an empty site, a direct result of the pandemic's impact.
Observing the crucial role that taxi operations played in transporting people to hospitals during this period, the idea for the project was born.
Recognizing the potential benefits, we initiated consultations with several key stakeholders, including the Department for Transport (DFT), the City of Edinburgh Council, Transport for Scotland, and Network Rail.
These discussions were essential to assess the long-term viability of the project and to ensure it aligned with broader transportation and urban planning goals.
Our primary focus was on how this project could enhance the customer journey at Waverley Station.
We aimed to integrate a reliable and efficient taxi service that would cater to the diverse needs of passengers. This included considerations for luggage requirements and mobility issues, which are critical for many travellers.
Choosing the right provider was a pivotal decision.
The selection process emphasized the importance of the type of vehicles used, ensuring they could meet the specific needs of all users.
This meant prioritizing accessibility features and sufficient space for luggage, among other factors.
Through these efforts, we aimed to create a seamless and supportive transportation option that would not only serve the immediate needs of the community but also contribute to the long-term resilience and functionality of the transportation network at Waverley Station.

Over the course of three days, a comprehensive driver training program was conducted for over 500 drivers, emphasizing best practices within a private car park.
The training sessions were organized in small groups to ensure personalized attention and effective learning.
During these sessions, drivers were thoroughly briefed on the layout of the car park, including key entry and exit points, and were instructed on the safest methods for accessing and leaving the site.
They were also reminded to observe local speed limits and were introduced to the use of decrement cards, which are issued on-site to monitor and manage parking durations.
Throughout the induction process, APCOA site management was actively involved, offering continuous support and guidance to address any questions or concerns that arose.
Their presence ensured that the training was conducted smoothly and that all drivers felt confident in their understanding of the procedures.
In addition to the training, taxi licensing officials from Waverley Court conduct regular weekly inspections of both vehicles and drivers on-site.
These inspections are part of an ongoing effort to ensure compliance with local regulations and standards.
Intercity welcomes these inspections as they help maintain high standards of safety and service quality within the car park.
